I don't like homilies/reflections which simply restate what the Gospel says. I prefer less "lofty" interpretations of these readings with challenging, thought-provoking commentary. The core of his message is great. I guess the format and the timing of the relection (i.e. prior to the reading) calls for a recounting of the readings. In fact, I'm listening to a reflection on LAST weekend's readings, not the coming. So perhaps my criticism isn't fair. However, certain homilists do a great job of making their comments very acceptable, very casual, very real. Others, like Fr. Philip, tend to be a little more formal or stiff - not my preference (to each his own.)
